Finn Slough

We are counting down the days now until we tear ourselves away from our lovely friends, Booky and K and their wonderful hospitality over the last few weeks.
We travelled 20 minutes from Vancouver to the very picturesque fishing town of Steveston where fishermen and women sell their wares directly from the back of their boats to a very willing locals, salmon, prawns and shark were the catches of the day.
A couple of miles down the road is the strangely eerie Finn Slough (pronounced Sloo) which was originally inhabited by Finns in the 1800’s as a small fishing community whose stilted homes led straight on to the inlet. over the years the inlet has become silted up, the wooden homes largely decayed as more and more folk left to seek work elsewhere. (Grounded boats in extras) A few homes are still occupied, some by decedents of the original Finnish families.

After lunch we spent a smashing hour with Goatee’s Aunt Virginia and Uncle Eric in their beautiful flat overlooking Stanley Park. It has been lovely to meet them after hearing so much about them over the last few years, they were the best hosts and treated us to a delicious lemon cake - one of LOH’s very own recipes - hard to beat.
