Sintra, just outside Lisbon
A day spent in Sintra which is an hour or so by train from Lisbon. A bit whimsical and almost Disney-like, it reminded me of Carcasonne in France. A fusion of different architectural styles, notably Moorish and romantic, the most impressive aspect for me was its location, high up into the hills overlooking the plains. Very verdant and cool perfect for escaping the summer heat which explains it's popularity with the Portuguese royalty in years gone by.
The evening was taken up with a certain WC game which England won in dramatic style. The game was poor in quality, with lots of stops and antics by players trying to play the referee. A good atmosphere nevertheless in the centre of Lisbon in the fan zone with both sets of fans behaving well.
