Smith Oaks Sanctuary .....

This morning we met back up at the Four Points to rendezvous with Shelley, Al and Sheryl as we made plans last night to go to a rookery that’s off the Island.

We all wanted to go but Richard and I would most likely spend the better part of the day there.  Sheryl wanted to check it out but didn’t want to spend all day so she drove with Shelley and Al who had been there a few days ago.

You have to take ferry off the island and then it’s about an hour drive to our first stop ….. the Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary.  There are some birds here especially some hummingbirds that feed off of a bottle brush plant.
It was another 25 minutes to the rookery from there.

The rookery is Smith Oaks Sanctuary and was AMAZING!!!  We could have spent all day there if we had the time! We spent about an hour there to start and then left to grab some lunch.  We also stopped back to see the hummingbirds before going back to the rookery.  My collage (in extras) shows only a few of the wonderful things we saw there ….. including alligators (not pictured),  snakes and squirrels! My favorites were, of course, the snowy egrets and the roseate spoonbills.

It took us just over an hour and a half to get back to Galveston ….. including the time on the ferry where some young girls were feeding the seagulls French fries!

It was another great day here in Galveston!
