Pillow lavas
I was on a field trip with the local geology group and we were visiting 5 different sites in Devon. Unfortunately the morning was raining steadily as we set off to view some lava outcrops around Chipley. This blip shows the pillow structure of the lava formed when the molten magmatic material from the earth's mantle met with shallow sea water. The extra shows the farmers field where we viewed the outcrop.
We opted for an early lunch and after this the rain stopped and it almost felt sub tropical in the warm humid air. We viewed the extensive Ball Clay quarry near Bovey Tracey then headed to Haldon Forest Park to view a more recent exposure of flint and lastly a working quarry on the way back where the lava deposits were full of vesicles known as vesicular lava. A very informative day, lets hope I can remember some of this.
