Friday Bottom #19

This week's bottom is from the back of a statue called The Man Child and was made by Frank Dobson in 1921. After WWI, Frank spent lot of time looking at the primitive societies of the world via the collections at the British Museum. He wanted to express himself through the ethnicity of simpler, more natural societies. He was particularly drawn to the Congo.

According to the Tate "The manchild of the title melds with two female figures who seem to embody maternal protection expressing both joy and fear for the new life." I find it strangely haunting.
