Project!

I have a confession - I have acquired a second allotment!  The idea is that, over the next year or so, I will bring this patch of over-grown land into cultivation and transfer my plants (fruit trees and bushes) from my existing allotment to this one.  I've been finding it a bit of a nuisance to have an hour round trip at the weekends to go and do my allotment now that I am down in Westbourne.

This plot is completely different to my first one.  Its on a more traditional allotment site and the soil is brown earth and I suspect a bit alkaline rather than sandy and acidic, so I am having a good look around other plots to see what is growing well, and not.  So far the people seem friendly, I have spoken with lots of people who have stopped and chatted with me and given me words of encouragement.

The first job is to get a brash cutter in to cut down the grass, then I am going to try to suppress the vegetation with black matting, then partly dig some, and have a no dig system on another area - in these areas I will put down manure and compost directly on to the weed suppressing matting and then sow into that soil.  Its a bit of an experiment really but hopefully an enjoyable one!  I'll let you know how I am getting on!

In Extras there is a view of the very front of the allotment - you can't even see into the plot!  I'll remove the corrugated iron and make some wooden compost areas.
