Westminster Cathedral
"Inspiration comes from everywhere: books, art, people on the street. It is an interior process for me."
Colleen Atwood
Day one of my trip to London for my birthday present from K2. That's for tomorrow, but if I'm going to the big smoke I like to take my time so it's a few days away, a mini holiday. I'm taking the opportunity of going to visit family in Stevenage too, and that's where I'm heading, but don't fancy carting my bags around with me all the time so I meet up with R at St James's Park to drop off one bag - keeping my camera bag of course - then stroll through the streets towards Victoria. Not sure of direction so I ask a guy who's living on the streets - very friendly and helpful and gives me good directions without hesitation.
And that's how I happened on my photo for the day, Westminster Cathedral. It took me a while to get my bearings, confusing this with Westminster Abbey of all places. I've not been here to the Cathedral and can't recall ever having seen it before. So my visit was only brief, for a meditation, I have to get on to get to Stevenage in time for the football - England are playing Colombia. The facade reminded me of Italian cathedrals with the banded stone elevations, it's a relatively "new" late Victorian cathedral built in the Early Christian Byzantine style, so lots of photographic interest. Made a mental note to visit again some time to go up the tower.
Fast train from Kings Cross only takes 20 minutes in air-conditioned comfort to Stevenage where D met me to take me home for barbeque with the family and watching the recorded football for the rest of the evening.
