Weeki Wachee River Trip
I have long wanted to go to Weeki Wachee River after seeing photos of the beautiful, clear, blue-green water. Our friend Kathy Pickera has gone there many times -she's a Florida Native. Steve said he could handle the kayaking now, even though he is recovering from his hip replacement in May, and he looks pretty happy here! I'm holding his waterproof Nikon Coolpix AW130 over my head to capture this main photo!
Weeki Wachee is about 2 hours north of us, but riding together in the car with Kathy made it enjoyable and the time went by fast. Steve & I rented a tandem kayak and Kathy got a single one. We set off from the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park at about 10:00 am and even with stopping for swim breaks, we finished the 5.5 mile trip by around 1:00 pm. A bus picked us up and took us back to our car. Pretty cool! YES!!! The water in this River is very cool - a constant 72-74 degrees F (22–23 °C) year-round because of the spring. The river is best known for its spring . . . but, it was very hot - at least 90F outside, so we did enjoy a cool dip and got acclimated to the water fast!
The water was so, so clear -very different from our muddy Braden River. I so enjoyed. Since it was a Holiday week (4th of July) Kathy said the river was a lot busier than usual with kayaks. But we did catch some quiet and really peaceful patches on the river. I would do it again. Some extra photos are below, enjoy!
