ZZ Birmingham

This man has a fantastic and almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the Blues and how it grew from the pagan heritage of imported slaves; without their instruments but with their music in their heads.

He'll regale you on how the split between Blues and Gospel came about through choices made between the old and the (masters') new religions. How the magic of the edge folk led to Hoodoo music, and where exactly you could obtain a mojo hand.

At the fringe ZZ and his crew raised the roof of the marquee, with folk without seats standing all around the outside looking in. His gigs become lectures on the Blues, and workshops where the audience becomes the backing vocal. Fab times.

So that's the Priddy Folk festival Fringe done for another year. Priddy is worth a visit at other times too, with lovely walks and a set of old barrows on the nearby hilltop.
