Breeny Mor
Cold but the sun was shining this morning, so we decided to make the most of it and indulge in a quick adventure. We headed north east, inland and up. First stop at a Lady's Well, situated at the back of an old cemetary. A little stream flows passed this site and it is chock ablock with statues of the BVM and still much visited. Two men clutching poppies and crosses were searching the graveyard looking for the grave of a young soldier who had recently died. The story was a sad one - he had served in Afghanistan, returned to the UK and been killed whilst on manoeuvres.
Onwards to Kealkil stone circle - a minute road winding up and up and a bit of stress on meeting a 4x4 coming down. The walk to the circle was incredibly wet and boggy but what an amazing sight/site! High up with long views across Bantry Bay, there is a tiny 5 stone circle, two massive standing stones and a radial cairn. I knew there was another stone circle in the vicinity but this involved a bit of trespass. Himself stayed in the car and I waded through bog and bracken to this... Only 3 stones now standing, and in the centre 4 huge boulder burials. Worth biggifying to see the mountains, island and sea in the background. They certainly knew how to chose an excellent location for whatever it was that was going on 4000 years ago.
