Guard Cat
My Dear Fellows & Dear Princess Normal,
Today there was a big firework display* down at the harbour. It was to celebrate Matariki (Maori New Year).
Actually, it was supposed to be last weekend, but -
a) There was a Southern Right Whale spotted in the harbour and the locals didn't want to disturb him. Which I thought was sweet.
b) This is what it looked like last week. I think if anyone had let off any fireworks they would have ended up in Melbourne.
Punky does not care for the fireworks and went off to the bedroom to be in the dark where it is safe. Jasper also hates them, but he is quite different. He goes on "full alert"; tail in the air, checking around for threats. He is like this little guard cat.
It took a while for him to come down from high alert. He sat at the top of his cat tree and secured the perimeter. But here he is this afternoon, all relaxed.
He really is a very good little chap.

* We got talking to a Scot at a bar a few months back. She rolled her eyes at Wellington fireworks. "I've stopped saying they are not as good as the Edinburgh ones," she told us. "I realised I was being obnoxious. Just go with it."
