Günter's 80th Birthday Party
I've known Günter since the summer of 1960, when we met at the Albert Schweitzer College in the mountains of Graubünden in Switzerland. (I spent three years there, in 1960-61 and 1963-65--the last two teaching German to non-German-speaking students.). The party was at the so-called Art Bar in Sachsenhausen (part of Frankfurt)--a restaurant with tables outside and music inside. A wonderful atmosphere, from 7;00 pm to midnight, talking to Günter's relatives and friends (three dozen or so, at the nearer tables). Earlier we took a long walk through the old center of Frankfurt (much of it newly reconstructed), afterwards passing this mural of an ostrich (see the extra) on the street. It commemorates the location of the hotel where Luther spent the night of 14 April 1521 on his visit to Frankfurt (reportedly met by cheering crowds).
