Greed...

When we moved into our home 31 years ago, the area between the main road (which is Lake Drive) and the actual Lake (Lake Michigan) was all open fields, full of native prairie plants, birds, insects, butterflies, etc. It wasn't unusual to see deer, coyote, or foxes walking through the fields in the evening on their way down to the Lake to drink water. The city sold off two portions of the land to a developer about 10 or 12 years ago, and the developer built a large apartment complex  and a large condominium complex, in spite of all the complaints by locals against allowing the developer to build there. At that time, the city counsel told us all that having more residents would lower the taxes, which of course--shock of shocks-- never happened. Now, in spite of the fact that some of those apartments & some of those condos are unoccupied, they've sold the remainder of the land to another developer, who is in the process of clearing the land to begin yet another--you guessed it--apartment complex.  The city counsel said that land development "moves a city forward into the future".  Not my idea of preparing for the future! Such a waste to lose beautiful, useful, open space just because of a greedy city & an equally greedy developer!
