when war broke out in 1914, the Indian Expeditionary Force was diverted from egypt to france. 70,000 Indian soldiers fought on the western front - 6 VC's were awarded for gallantry. by the end of the war, one million Indian soldiers saw action in all theatres of conflict. 7700 died and 16,400 wounded.
the photo is of the entrance to the Muslim Cemetery in Woking. planned in 1915, Woking was chosen as it had the only mosque in the country. its arches, minarets and gate house are reflected in the design of the cemetery. 24 muslim soldiers were buried, but they have since been moved to Brookwood due to vandalism
