St Abbs Head
N and I have had a wonderful day! We went down to St Abbs Head to join Chris Packham's Bioblitz event there at the nature reserve. There were groups of volunteers and rangers from NTS who were there for visitors to speak to and these groups were looking at the butterflies and moths [ sadly we didn't make it to that station :( ] , marine life, birds and life around the loch which is in the reserve. There was also a small survey boat doing a survey of the underwater geography as St Abbs is also a marine reserve.
I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a Minke Whale off shore and we saw so many butterflies and moths there. The bird life included Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Cormorants, House Martins and Wagtails.
The Bioblitz is part of a series of events taking place around Britain and led by CP where the team in conjunction with local rangers and volunteers are attempting to get a baseline for species in Nature Reserves and to encourage us all to be more engaged with and aware of the nature around us.
We saw our first Small Copper Butterfly and I managed to get a shot of a Meadow Brown Butterfly [ see extras]. They were all very active as it was so warm.
We rounded up with a visit to Coldingham Priory where there is a lovely working church on the site of a much more ancient priory. The final extra - and engraved paving stone at the Priory - summed up the day for me :)
