Historic Waterfront
Took a trip along the western side of Southampton Water today to Ashlett Creek, a tidal inlet at the southern end of Southampton Water and home of the local sailing club.
In truth there is not a great deal more there apart from a pub, the Jolly Sailor, an historic 19th century tide mill and a handful of houses.
Best check the tides before you visit or you could find there is a rather greater expanse of mudflats than water, but today I was in luck and at high water there was a fair bit of activity on the water.
The mill itself is now the clubhouse for the Waterside Sports and Social Club as well as the Ashlett Sailing Club and with a free landing slipway next to it, is a popular with dinghy sailors while the creek is home for many small craft, and a green which borders the creek is a favoured recreational area.
Historians suggest the creek was once a landing and loading place for grain and salt using flat bottomed barges.
Today, the prospect of a beer at the Jolly Sailor while surveying the occasional movement on the water, was a much better idea.
