The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
I noticed this little chap wandering around on the parched grass, it is a Burnett Moth Caterpillar which feeds on Ragwort. There is an area of wild flowers close to this lawn and a couple of Ragwort plants are growing in it so I picked up the Caterpillar and took it to one of them. It almost lept off my hand and started munching immediately. A couple of hours later it had eaten the petals from 2 flowers and was starting on its third.
How fickle we humans are, earlier I had been inspecting the box plants for Caterpillar signs and, had I found any, would have been spraying to get rid of them.
This evening I had a surprise dinner guest after we had an unplanned dog walk on Stockbridge Down, it was a very pleasant walk.
