A bit too close to home!
Yesterday I posted a picture of a small forest fire I found on my travels. This one is much bigger and, more worryingly, viewed from the garden. We noticed the fire about 1:30. This picture was taken at 3 o'clock. In that time it had spread about a kilometer westwards, fanned by the steady sea breeze. As it spread we were relieved to see it was behind (and not in front of) the hill above our village. This means it stays 3 kilometers from us, and it's much less likely to head in our direction. Another plus is there are no permanent homes in that valley.
The fire services had gone into action around noon but now, at midnight, the fire is still out of control. The wind has completely dropped and the fire fighters are working to protect a number of summer cottages around a lake in the path of the fire. They are hoping for a helicopter to water bomb the fire, and/or for rain which is forecast for to fall for 4 hours tomorrow. Previously forecast rain has failed to appear but it has got cloudy so we are hoping.
We aren't so worried about our home burning up because so far the fire fighters have managed to protect all homes but if that smoke starts coming our way it will be very unpleasant.
There are 83 fires burning just now in Sweden, including 4 that the authorities say can’t be put out because they are just too big. Those fires will hopefully be kept away from homes but otherwise will burn until we get serious rain for a long period.
On a more positive note Sweden is getting help from many other parts of the EU. Danish and Norwegian firefighters are already in action, 130 Polish firefighters are on the way with their equipment, helicopters are arriving from Norway, Germany and Lithuania to drop water on the fires and 2 Italian and 2 French firefighting aircraft are already waterbombing the fires.
If it rains tomorrow a lot of people will be very happy!
