Daisy ducks
Had a two hour local walk this afternoon finding lots of hedgerow fruit. The blackberries were ready to pick although some were quite bitter tasting. The sloes, plums, apples and greengage should be ripe in a few weeks . These trees that are left to grow wild were once in commercial fruit orchards. Now no longer produced for the market they are left growing adjacent to the local fields. In season there are also pears. Who needs Asda?
In contrast are the commercially grown strawberries that are planted in the hundreds of huge polytunnels at the back of the adjacent fields. Thousands of big strawberries are growing in special containers. They are very tasty.
We came across more polytunnels that were planted with pots of raspberries not yet in fruit.
see extra.
It is strange to think that this agricultural land has been offered to the local council for future housing development, as part of the government's initiative to concrete over the whole of south east England. Each local authority has been ordered to provide possible sites for housing. Perhaps they would like our chicken field now it has housing surplus to the birds needs.
