A day out in the City of Durham...

...as we realised neither of us has been for more than 50 years...
I must have been really struck by the sanctuary knocker on the main door when I visited from junior school all those years ago, as I remember taking a photograph of it then too - I've probably still got it somewhere  ;) 
The knocker is a replica of the 12th Century original. Until 1623, when the right of sanctuary was abolished, those being pursued for certain crimes could enter the cathedral by grasping hold of the ring - it is worn shiny - and they would then be offered a safe place or "sanctuary". You can imagine their gratitude - but they only had 37 days before they would be required to leave the country or face trial.
We took in the Shrine of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede's Tomb too - so I guess that covers humility - and the Rose Window is as glorious as I remember it ;)
Nice lunch in the cathedral café, and a walk along the river to round the day off.
