Cristina Kirchner
So after living in Buenos Aires for just under three months the one person I have heard most about is Cristina Kirchner aka the current Argentine President. And so far 100% of what I have heard is negative! I have heard her criticised for a range of things, from to her failure to halt the rapidly rising inflation (or to even acknowledge there is an inflation problem) - quite reasonable, to a lost purse - somewhat unlikely!
This Thursday the anti-Cristina Portenos decided to gather in protest to express in true Argentine style their displeasure - and it truly was amazing. Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children marched through the city banging pots and pans before gathering in front of the Casa Rosada - the presidential palace. Those who couldn't march gathered on balconies and in the streets honking horns and banging tin cans so that the entire city seemed to be partaking in some curious improvised percussion piece.
Regardless of my opinion on her I was fascinated by the degree of political participation and passion amongst Portenos young and old!
