Runeberg

Today is the memorial of the Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (yes, his mother tongue was Swedish and he wrote in Swedish - for example the lyrics to the Finnish national anthem Vårt land).

This is a Runeberg cake, named after the poet, who used to have a breakfast consisting of a glass of schnapps and a dry cake with a drop of jam on top of it. That's why a café owner in poet's hometown Porvoo (50 km east of Helsinki) named the cake after Runeberg.

The cake is usually moistened with rum or with punssi (a kind of arrack liqueur) - like the one I blipped today.
