Salmonberry
This is clearly my time for discovering gaps in my knowledge. I went for a walk today on Corstorphine Hill up to Clermiston Tower. I'd never read the plaque before to realise it is a Monument to Sir Walter Scott, mind you I don't think I've been there for 50 years, I must have been in my early teens when we had a guide midnight hike there. Never been back, despite living so nearby all my life.
On my way back down, I came across what looked like extremely tall raspberry canes, although the fruit were clearly not raspberries.
A little bit of research on Plantnet tells me they are salmonberries, another successful invasive species from the US which has escaped from gardens into the wild. Certainly they seem to have established themselves well here, into fairly dense thickets along the path. They are around 7ft high, I saw very few berries, those that there were, were just two or three cells. They had quite a striking corona almost like that on a tiny passion flower.
It was a good day for a walk, lots of dogs and runners using the paths. Sadly the Himalayan Balsam has also made it up here.
