Carey Tower - Castle Cornet
A wet day with drizzle on and off. My blip today is of Carey Tower within Castle Cornet. The tower was constructed in 1435 and was intended to house cannon with a range of fire over the harbour and St. Peter Port. We can see projecting corbels that would once have held a parapet and wallwalk. During the English Civil war, Guernsey sided with Parliament, but the castle remained loyal to the King. The castle was besieged, but it held out for eight years, since it was possible to resupply it by sea. In that time the cannon fired 10,000 shot into St.Peter Port ! It was the last Royalist castle to surrender.
