Bumble bee nest disturbed
I noticed this fair sized hole in the lawn(!) at the back of the house with what looked like large droppings. On further inspection the droppings looked like dead and empty cells and looking in the hole there were more. What had probably happened was that a badger must have espied bumble bees coming out of the ground and searched further until it dug down into the nest. There were a few dead bumble bees amongst the debris and by the time I had fetched my camera bees were flying out of the hole. So I just pushed some of the earth back and hope the others still in there survive. Apparently bumble bees will use a redundant rodent nest under the ground if they are lucky enough to find one. The extra photograph is of some of the debris found on top.
