U.S. Capitol Building
A familiar sight, taken from the middle of the Washington D.C. Mall at the end of the afternoon, returning from our afternoon-long visit to the National Gallery of Art (NGA). You can read more on the Capitol here. We took the train from Baltimore in the morning, where we had been visiting my son's family.
My fondest memory of the Capitol is the first time I saw it, in the late 1970's. It was a superb late spring afternoon, and friends drove us around the building. The gleaming white dome seemed unimaginably wonderful to me--an unforgettable experience.
The NGA is one of my favorite museums. We had not been to Washington for at least three years--too long, we felt--and it was wonderful to see it again. The most significant exhibition was a Roy Liechtenstein retrospective. I'm not particularly fond of him, but it was interesting nevertheless. Otherwise we spent time in small photo, drawing and print exhibitions--if you're really interested you can poke around for them on the NGA website.
