Sentinel

This early morning silhouette reminds me of the work of Kara Walker, an artist known for her room-size installations of black cut-paper work that explores themes of racism, identity and gender. That heavy sentence means once you've been in one of those rooms, you will always have those images with you. They are intricate, violent, confrontational, provocative and weirdly beautiful. I used to think of silhouettes as keepsakes, like the one done of me as a child, all button-nose and sweet. Walker has certainly added another dimension to that art form. 

Anyway, these birds were in the morning tree, and I thought of her work...
