A star in the face of the sky
"Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
They say Spain is pretty though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much
Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky"
Elton John ~ Daniel (lyrics by Bernie Taupin)
I was casting around for a blip this evening with the long lens on, vaguely hoping to see a bird or something, anything really, that I could blip. The sky was starting to colour up nicely but it was still going to be a while yet until sunset. Seeing a jet's contrail I zoomed in and realised that actually this might make a reasonable shot.
According to Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin "'Daniel' was the most misinterpreted song that they wrote together. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home."
If you click on the link to YouTube you will see a mid 1970s performance in a TV studio on what would have been a chart hits programme complete with the studio audience half heartedly dancing in their '70s finery. I so remember those clothes and hair styles :-) Was 1973 the year that style passed by? We didn't think so at the time, but looking back now ...
