'The Eagle' Courtyard.
During the 17th C, it was a coaching Inn, known as 'The Eagle And Child.' Inside is the famous ceiling inscribed using candles, lipstick and charcoal, with the squadron numbers of the RAF and AAF. I have actually been in there and seen it done, when a school friend's older sister had her birthday party in there and sneaked us in for a while. It was also in the 'Eagle' on 28th Feb 1953, that Francis Crick and James Watson announced they had found the secret of life, on discovering how DNA carries genetic information. They and a colleague, Maurice Wilkins shared a Nobel Prize but Rosalind Franklin whose work with x-rays helped with the discovery, died before it was awarded and they are not given posthumously, which is a shame..
