Back-Breaking Work

We've had a few days off from our garden project, due to our wedding anniversary and time with friends, which was brilliant.
But back to garden work today though, and as we had kindly been lent a breaker from our friend S, we (or rather M) set to.  We originally needed it because we found the foundations of a wall buried just a few inches below the surface of the soil, partly where we want to turf and partly where we want a flower bed.  So M used it to break up the concrete and bricks, but we also found it useful for breaking up an extremely hard area of soil (which had been compacted under a path for several years).  We just couldn't get the fork in it, even though we have sandy soil.  It is also full of rubble and flint which the garden fork was struggling to get through.
I was assisting by following him around digging where he'd applied the breaker and gathering up the resultant rubble.
It was extremely hot, dusty and back-breaking work, so we finished just before lunch and then enjoyed much-needed cool showers.
This garden re-design has turned into a much bigger and harder job than we expected, but we (must!) be near the end of the really hard jobs now!  In some masochistic way we are actually enjoying the challenge and hard-labour!
Loads of manure being delivered shortly...digging that into the lawn is the next job.
