Sitting on top of the world
Well, he wasn't really. The Heron was actually sitting on top of the statue that is standing in the large pond at the park. Of all the times that I've seen him there, this was the first time that he was sitting all the way up there. Normally, that spot is occupied by a gull.
Today was a very grey day with poor light again and I had already made peace with the thought that I was going to have to blip one of the shots I'd taken of various autumn leaves before starting my walk with the female Rottweiler from the sanctuary. That was before we walked past the large pond though.
I first looked at the base where the Heron usually sits and I was very surprised when I spotted him at the top of the statue. The compact camera that I had in my pocket didn't have enough zoom to even attempt to get a good shot so I stopped at the nearest bench to take the Heron Nikon camera out of my bag. Unfortunately the Heron was facing the wrong way so we had to walk to the other side of the pond first but to my relief he hadn't moved yet when we got there and I was able to take two photos before he flew off. I had already decided at that moment that the Heron would become my blip for today if one of the shots looked good enough on the computer screen and fortunately this one did.
I have to say that the dog I was walking this afternoon was a very good girl and she sat quietly waiting for her treat while I was taking the photos.
