Bring wolves back to Scotland
Jim Crumley is a passionate advocate for the introduction of wolves into the Scottish landscape .
Writer and documentary maker Jim said the turning point for him was a trip to Alaska to do a programme on wolves and tonight he gave a talk to Dunblane Wildlife club on why we should re-introduce them.
The environment would benefit and it would help to restore the balance.
He said the biggest problem is our irrational fear of them. Myths around the world all tell the same story: big black wolves devouring children on some lonely hill.
Yet there is not the slightest evidence they ever attacked children.
How many wolves could Scotland accommodate - "About 30 to 40."
He reckons it will take time - the case for beavers took 15 years and that was an easy animal with none of the baggage of wolves - so it could be longer before we hear the lone wolf howling in the Scottish Glen.
But they will return.
PS Afterwards I bought a copy of his book "The Last Wolf" and I was touched that he remembered me. We used to work on the same newspaper.
