Two Dover castles
Hot, hot, hot in Dover today but luckily there was a bit of a breeze to cool things down. I visited Dover castle today and really enjoyed it.
Usually at some point castles become obsolete, are destroyed or fall into ruin, but what is different about Dover castle is that it’s remained important and operational for hundreds of years due to its location near the coast of France and to protect against invasion. Through the years it was regularly modernised for each new threat of invasion, from the war of independence, the napoleonic wars, the 1850s when there were fears of an invasion by Napoleon III, to WW1, WW2 and even the Cold War when it’s deep underground tunnels would be Home to a cross section of government who could hide during a nuclear attack. There was therefore a lot to see including the underground tunnels built in the early 1800s and converted into a command post where the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 was organised. I was fond of the rare WW1 anti-aircraft gun they have on show too.
I decided though to Blip this excellent sand castle that represents the medivael great tower and inner bailey behind. Top marks for the person who made it. It was very accurate.
