The Workhouse Chimney

The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 led to the building of a large number of workhouses as the law meant that no able-bodied person could get poor relief unless they went to live in a workhouse- dreaded by many in dire circumstances.
The Winchester Union Workhouse was built in 1836 and finally closed in 1830 and became St Paul's Hospital for the elderly, many of whom could uncomfortably remember it as the Workhouse!
In the 90's it was closed and turned into houses and flats. This tall chimney, the only one remaining in Winchester, was retained and is a well known landmark.
Thank goodness for Google!
I was walking past the chimney today and was really trying to blip the seed pods on the tree against the blue sky. Seeing that the chimney was in the photo I thought I would find out more about it.
I really ought to go on a proper tour around this lovely ancient city.
