Kirkby Slate Quarry
The slate used to be loaded here onto a special gravity railway truck system called the "Long Incline"and taken down to the river but now it's taken away in trucks from the other side of the quarry . . The old railway track is now a public footpath that provided some historical interest to our Tuesday walk. The slate mine has been here since the 1820s and the blue/ grey slate is sold as Burlington Slate. I am told that using imported slate from Brazil to tile a roof is a third the cost of local slate.
