The Little Bay

The name Oban means 'The Little Bay' and as far as I can make out, Port Beag means much the same - maybe 'The Little Harbour'. Snapper will put me right.

Port Beag is on the south side of the Oban seafront and was apparently given to the fishermen of Oban a long time back to allow them to beach their boats and make repairs. Many of the old huts still remain. At some point the lifeboat was given a berth here and only this year this facility has been modernised.

At the same time, the area beside the road where boats used to be stored has unofficially been filled in with spare aggregate and also unofficially topped with road planings from somewhere - it has now unofficially become a car park.

Local people are most unhappy about the way that the council bends the rules just to suit themselves on a regular basis. It really ought not to happen, but don't get me started on that!
