The end of empire...?

Today we took our Syrian refugee family to one of the prime local attractions, a reconstructed Iron Age hillfort. Today's summer visitor activities had a Celts and Romans theme, which of course offered the children a chance to dress and parade as legionaries. I reminded them that at the time the Empire stretched from Britain to Syria and beyond, but they didn't seem very interested. It's the clash of newer empires that keeps them from their homeland, but they're settling beautifully here and hopefully will be allowed to stay and contribute to Welsh life and culture.
