Ruthwell Cross
The weather was a bit inclement so we took to the car and explored down the Solway to the east of Dumfries and found the wee church at Ruthwell where there is one of the finest examples in Britain of 8th Century christian sculpture. Wikipedia has a very good description of how and why it is still around in the21st century. It is still quite a sight in a simple, austere church. We could have visited the museum in the village dedicated to Savings Banks which origated here in 1810.
Everyday's a school day........
