Aggstein and Melk
We went to the ruined Burg (fortress) at Aggstein by the Danube today. We visited this last year with some friends but it was such a contrast: today was warm and sunny but last time it was drizzly and misty. We saw that the Knight's Hall had been set up for a wedding then I caught sight of the couple's photo shoot high up on part of the ruin after we had finished. I couldn't resist this as my Blip.See extra for the wide view and the sunny comparison.
We drove to a Heuriger for lunch. Heuriger means new wine and is usually a tavern selling homemade wine and produce. My sister and I had pink roasted Hirsch (deer) with Eierschwammel (type of local mushroom) washed down with a Grüner Veltliner or 2. Delicious, as was dessert (extra)
We then drove to Melk to visit the famous Benedictine Monastry. It was a bit rushed as we were late getting there but it was still impressive. Another wedding was happening there - we were just in time to see the bride and groom parading through the courtyard with the wedding guests following behind.
We left for home and the GPS sent us through some tiny towns making the the trip a bit slow but very picturesque. Our next stop was to pick up a Steckerlfisch which we had ordered during the week from the next town to us. That was also delicious despite the fact that I wasn't feeling very hungry. AND we squeezed in a bit of Riebisel (red currant) cake after.
