Birthday Showers

Some hills have their very own weather system.

A day out for Shenny's birthday. I was given responsibility for the itinerary (what were they thinking?) so the order of the day was walking over the fells, taking a few hours to go under the fell and getting soaked in the process, then quite a few more hours of climbing up and down again in showers of hail and rain. She loved it. Or, at least, that's what she told me. By some miracle, we arrived at our booked table for a celebration meal at the Gamecock Inn precisely on time. 

Actually, the worst showers passed us by. We only really got wet when we were underground. That truly was a miracle. 

NB I'd not been down the winch into Gaping Gill in over 40 years. There are only two opportunities to descend each year. If you're in the Dales in the next few days then check it out here. I can thoroughly recommend the experience. It's truly awesome. Take full waterproofs.
