RNLI, Dungeness, , Martello Tower
A home touristy day today. Firstly up to Dungeness to support the RNLI. I even bought a 2019 calendar, how organised am I?!
Then through to Dymchurch, where we had a beer before the tower opened. I had read about a pub called The City of London, and how nice it was, and the food good, but as we had only seen it from the road, and it looked derelict, we thought we’d check it out beachside. A lovely pub, steeped in history. Originally called the Seawall Tavern in the 17th century, it was knocked to the ground in the 18th century when a ship succumbed to a fierce storm in the bay and crashed into the tavern. The ship was called the City of London, and so they rebuilt it with timber and materials from the wreck and renamed it! It has recently been restored again, and is still historic but with a modern twist.
The Martello Tower didn’t disappoint and I was offered a stewarding role when I retire! It’s only one for a couple of hours at weekends in the summer and the volunteers were wonderfully enthusiastic. It didn’t even charge to go in, although there was a donation pot.
We walked to the sea walk, the tide was right in, so no beach at all in this part of the bay, but I couldn’t resist a photo of Littlestone from this side. Dungeness on the left and the Littlestone Water Tower just visible (circled).
Mr L complaining bitterly about his knees by the time we got home, so I walked Dog and enjoyed some peace and quiet!
