roamin' in Northumbria
Back in 2009, Anniemay and I rode our bikes along the Hadrian's Wall cycle route from Solway to Tynemouth. We wanted a bit of a challenge to celebrate my getting the all-clear from cancer. (It came back a year later but that's another story.)
It was a big deal for Anniemay back then - probably her first really big bike ride. So today, as we were travelling from Cockermouth to Newcastle, we decided to take the old Military Road across Northumbria and see if we could find the old bike route.
We found some parts of it and amazed ourselves at just how big and long some of the hills we climbed were. This was before I needed an electric bike - if we were doing it now it would be a piece of cake for me.
We stopped at the Roman Army museum and Vindolanda. Both are just amazing. We had lunch at The Sill which is a new Landscape Discovery Centre near Vindolanda. Again a really interesting place and well worth a visit.
We rounded the day off by finding Sycamore Gap (see extra). Yay and tick.
Now in our hotel in Newcastle looking forward to seeing the 'Great Exhibition of the North'.
