Water soldiers

In our pond, the water soldiers have rather a lot of competition from duckweed. My theory is that the duckweed keeps evaporation down, so the pond is fuller than it otherwise would be, and the duckweed goes unchecked. Whether the newts and creatures underneath like it, I don't know! Not that I know how to deal with the weed, other than scooping handfuls out every day.
