Day 2 Road Scholar Tour
After our altitude-adjustment -- and beer tasting -- stay in Fort Collins, we headed back to Denver to join the Road Scholar tour The Best of Colorado's Historic Railroads. Day 1 was just an introduction and orientation at the Hilton hotel near the airport.
On Day 2 we embarked on our very comfortable coach which deposited us at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. We had the option of riding in this appropriately named Galloping Goose on a short loop. As you can see, it's a highly modified passenger car. It was built to deliver passengers and mail to remote mining towns at a lower cost than a train. There were only seven of these built, and six still exist.
Another feature of the museum was a huge, very detailed, model train layout -- first extra.
The next stop was at Georgetown. After lunch we rode the Georgetown Loop Narrow Gauge RR ( extra #2) to Silver Plume, from where our coach took us to the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs, our home for the next two nights. It wasn't exactly elegant, but quite pleasant.
