Proudly depicted on the front cover of Britain's Hoverflies this large and beautiful species is Scaeva pyrastri commonly known as the Pied hoverfly.
It is found throughout Britain, but is rarer the further north you go, and can be found from May to November as it is thought very few would survive a British winter the breeding population each year depends on migration from mainland Europe.
I have also added another shot of the Small Heath butterfly, this time taken on acid heath land covered in dew in the bush where it was roosting overnight.
