RLS - a man of letters

Back through to Edinburgh again today to meet up with an old pal for lunch.  Took a stroll through Prince's Street Gardens past one of my favourite spots, the Robert Louis Stevenson memorial grove.  In contrast to the huge flashy Scott memorial that everybody marvels at, RLS has a simple stone surrounded by silver birch trees with the inscription "RLS a man of letters".  It was his wish that there should be no statue of him and I think he would have approved of this modest but beautiful spot.

I was living in Edinburgh in 1999 when they were first planted and I remember taking 6 year old  FFM Jr to see the saplings which were then about the same height as he was.   Nearly 20 years later they are about 5 times his height and still going strong.
