Great Black Wasp
The first one I've ever seen, and initially I thought it was a hummingbird moth because of its size. When I got closer I realized it was some kind of wasp, close to 2 inches long; I had to look it up when I got home. It's a type of digger wasp that is an important pollinator, especially of milkweed species. They sting and paralyze insects like grasshoppers and cicadas to provide food for their offspring. After paralyzing the insects, they deposit them in an underground nest, then lay a single egg on the underside of the "victim". When the egg hatches it feeds on its "host". Yummy! Interesting to see but it looks wicked in person, & it flies with those long legs just dangling down, which looked really creepy! :)))
