This Was The Day
Looking back my setlist.fm entries (gigs list), I went to 1 or 2 gigs a year until 2009 when we went to the Green Man festival, and it kind of changed there. Ms H was a wee lass then, enjoyed the festivals, but had very selective tastes until she saw up-and-coming 16 year old Declan McKenna there in 2015 and her tastes began changing. Since then she's been happy to go to our gigs, and we've been happy to go to her gigs. It's the one thing I wanted to pass down her... be open to all music... and it seems to have worked.
She's always playing music we've never heard of before and it grows on us, but my favourite is when she plays something where she is unaware we already like it and we've got the CDs. "The The" were one such artist and their Soul Mining album. Despite her disappointment, it doesn't put her off and she's happy to keep listening to Mum/Dad music!
So last year we went to see a Q&A of Infected, a film by The The and Matt Johnston was asked about touring again. Infected and then Soul Mining blew me away back in the mid 80s so I'd never thought we'd get a chance to see them performing but This Was The Day, at the Barrowlands. It was a cut back set, white, red and blue lighting, no backdrop, no frills, just music... and photos/videos were politely banned! We were are the very front, so I squeezed in a few from the hip shots which turned out ok... no other guests were distracted by taking of this blip!
Matt's voice was in excellent form and I was loving the guitars of Barrie Cadogan who I'd not heard of before. It was a great gig, so glad I got to see them finally. It's also our last planned gig with Ms H before she heads off to Uni... who knows when next... but she has asked for us to always ask her before we book tickets, and she wants another Green Man visit next year! How can we refuse :-)
