Austerity
Of course I knew when the library closed it would not end well, and for 18 months or so plans have been proposed and circulated. The construction of shops ( just how many shops can the area support, they are closing in the town just a mile away) and some flats, ( and they'll be affordable in the full sense of the word, I assume) has been passed and the developer has moved in. Apparently keeping a library would cost £40000 a year, but would provide a sense of community, resource local voluntary groups and keep books available to all. This what what is happening up and down the country, everything which has been built up over the last 60 years or so is being dismantled. And what for? Profit before people and cuts which were never really needed. Dogma.
How's all this going to end?
