Desirable residence on the market
This shows the former Donaldson's College. It was founded by philanthopist James Donaldson in 1851 (originally called Donaldson's Hospital) and built to a design by noted architect William Henry Playfair. At first bursaries were used to help poor children attend, and applications from deaf children were prioratised. Come 1938 the college was exclusively for the benefit of deaf students and it was in use until the college moved to more practical modern facilities as recently as 2008. The building was sold to a developer to turn into luxury apartments (groan) but the scheme ran out of money so now it's back on the market being touted as a potential high class hotel. In their wisdom, Edinburgh City Council are trying to overturn the historic ban on constructing new structures on the large grass area in front of the main college building. Doing so could ruin a classic Edinburgh sight which is popular with locals and passing tourists.
